Oscar, the killer siamese, takes stock of the great outdoors
Oscar, our Siamese Cat, is an indoor-only cat. He has not stepped paw outside in 12 years other than when he is forcibly carried in his kitty-carrier, howling all the way! Even these occasions are rare – annual Vet visits and when we moved last year. Oscar is the most timid cat that I have ever met. Whenever a child comes within 100 yards of our house, he immediately dives under the bed. He is also high-strung. He threw up for a week after we puppy-sat last month. So it is quite surprising that Oscar has recently been coming downstairs and hanging out near the porch doors. Yesterday, I decided to lure him out to the deck. His favorite thing in the world (next to chasing twisty-ties on our bed) is being brushed. I grabbed his brush and went out on the deck, cajoling him to step into new territory by thumping the brush on the ground.
Can you teach an old cat new tricks?
After several false starts, he finally crept outside, hugging the wall as closely as possible. It was a FREAKING MIRACLE! Oscar, the agoraphobic kitty, had actually left the house! But how long would it last? Oscar slunk along the bench, frequently stopping to smell the air and listen to the neighborhood noises. Why does it sound different outside the door?
Where is that darn brush anyway? It’s really scary out here!
Do It Yourself Brushing
I could not document Oscar’s Great Adventure and brush him at the same time, so he had to be left to his own devices. Luckily, he has lots of practice brushing himself. When we are feeling too lazy (frequently), we just put the brush on the ground for him.
Enough Excitement
Oscar’s adventure was short-lived. After a quick pose for the camera, he turned and raced for the door and sanctuary. This morning he is recovering from his amazing expedition, sleeping under the covers in our bed.

Hurrah for Oscar! It took courage for him to go out in the big world!
