Holidays

This season is for kids, no doubt about it. The adults are all feeling extra stress, but the kids can barely contain their excitement. My nieces, Bella and Bridgette, still believe in Santa Claus, elves and Christmas lists. It is an opportunity to create warm feelings and happy memories.

When I was a teenager, I ran Santa’s Workshop for my younger brothers and sisters. We baked brownies, made ornaments and wrote letters to Santa with Christmas Carols playing on the stereo. My brother, Bobby, is nine years younger than me so he was the age that Bella is now. Our Santa’s Workshops were a special time for him so he wanted to pass the experience on to his children.

I agreed to revive the Santa’s Workshop of old. For a couple of weeks it was all that Bella and Bridgette talked about. Last weekend they came over. The carols were playing, the Styrofoam balls were pre-painted and ready to go and the floor was covered with a tarp. For a couple of hours the girls concentrated on sticking sparkles, ribbon and rhinestones to the balls. Then it was time for the sugar high, courtesy of Dunkin Donuts.

Once they were buzzing on chocolate and frosted donuts, the ornament making was done. The results: Bella and Bridgette created several attractive and sparkly ornaments for their tree and more importantly, we all had lots of fun.
