One of the [many] great things about dogs is that you can anthropomorphize to your heart’s content and they will never contradict you. For instance, I have interpreted this look from our sometimes visitor, Sunny, as all of the following:
“What do you want from me? I don’t speak human!”
“Are we going yet?”
“I’m hungry. Where did that squirrel get to?”
“I’ll follow you anywhere.”
“Fine, you’re my pack leader… so now what?”
“I don’t really have to do what you tell me, you know.”
“I love you!”
What she’s really thinking…. nothing. Dog’s don’t think! People think.
Now I’m not saying dogs aren’t awesome creatures or that they’re not really smart. I’m just saying, they don’t use words and they don’t use reason. They use instinct. They know things — sometimes more clearly than we do. They recognize the truth of what we are by what our energy says about us. We can lie to ourselves, but we can’t lie to the dogs in our lives.
It seems that in some ways dogs are smarter than us:
- Dogs won’t follow an unstable pack leader — humans will
- Dogs can’t be fooled by what you say — humans can be
- Dogs don’t continue to suffer for what happened to them in the past — humans do
- Dogs don’t worry about the future — humans do
- Dogs live in the present moment — do you?
Maybe thinking, words and reason can sometimes be overrated. Maybe we should learn from the dogs.
