2008 Emmys

I don’t know how it happened, but we ended up watching the 60th Anniversary Emmy Award show last night. Yes, it was a bit masochistic of us, but there you have it. We actually had to mute parts of the show because they were just too painful to watch (our masochism has limits), like the theme song tribute sung by Josh Groban (how did he get suckered into doing that?) or the Laugh-In reprise (seemed like a good idea, but it really did not work).

Lighter Moments

There were some moments that made the ordeal worthwhile:

  • Don Rickles making fun of the show and particularly the corny lines given to the celebrity announcers
  • Tina Fey’s acceptance speeches
  • Steve Martin… just as we were ready to switch over to a DVD
  • Tommy Smuthers… thanked his writers for getting him fired
  • The award for the reality show host… “and we’ll tell you who won (long pause) right after this commercial message (cut to commercial)
  • Stephen Colbert eating prunes… ’nuff said

My favorite line of the evening actually came during a commercial for windows: “I am a human being, not a human doing or a human thinking. I am a human being.”
-Deepak Chopra

Hollywood and Politics

There were, of course, the celebrities who could not resist using the spotlight to make a political statement – though notably NOT Alec Baldwin. I guess they could not resist given the presidential election is 42 days away. Generally, although the references were obvious, they were not as in-your-face as past award shows. For instance, Laura Linney thanked the original “community organizers” who formed the US. Mild though this was, enough already!

Who Won

The big winners were 30 Rock, John Adams and Mad Men. I have never been able to get into 30 Rock but we will give it one more try if we can find the episode with Tim Conway.

CBS has a full list of Emmy Award Winners.

I love Tina Fey but why did she have to plug her show’s timeslot and the DVD release? Really Michael Vick?
